Built in the year 700 BC The Great Wall is located in China and is the longest man made structure to have ever existed. The total length of the wall is 5,500.3 miles and it extends from Hushan in Liaoning to Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu. The wall served as a defensive perimeter against the intruding Mongols at that time but now it serves as one of the main tourist attractions in China.

Originally known as Raqmu. Petra is an archaeological site which was once a city located in southern Jordan. It is still known as a lost city as it is still revealing secrets to this day. The city is completely carved from rock and has several tombs, halls, narrow passage ways and even theaters. By the latest accounts, the city came into existence around 312 BC and has seen many rulers including the Romans and Byzantine.

The site is located within a rocky canyon but is fairly easily accessible from the nearby city of Amman via a 4 hour highway drive which is very comfortable. You can visit the Siq which is the entrance of the city carved into the mountain, then it is a hike up 822 steps to reach the monetary which gives a stunning view of the entire canyon. #4 How long did it take to build Chichen Itza?

No one knows for sure. Chichen Itza is an archaeological site located in Tinúm Municipality, Yucatán State, Mexico. It was once an inhabited city built by the Mayans. The name of the city literally means “At the mouth of the well of the Itza People”. It is believed to have been completed in the year 600 AD. Just when and how did the city meet its fate is something that archaeologists are still not sure of but popular theories include a natural disaster or an external attack. The city’s most famous landmark is perhaps the El Castillo pyramid located at the center of the city. Including that, the following sites can be visited inside the city’s remains even today:

Machu Picchu is a 15th century Inca citadel sitting on top of a mountain. It is about 2,430 meters above sea level. The site is located in the Cusco Region, Urubamba Province, Peru. According to most estimates, the city was inhabited in 1450 AD. However the reason for its downfall still perplexes archaeologists to this day. The site is undergoing a restoration process since the late 1960s. The restoration is still in progress to this day. The three main places to visit here are 1) “Inti Watana”. 2) “The temple of the sun” and 3). the “Room of the three windows”. It really is a beautiful place that makes you wonder just how much the human body can achieve and just how it knows no limits and no boundaries.

Since the site is considered a no fly zone by UNESCO so the only way to reach the city is via long hike starting at the base of the mountain. Steps are being taken to introduce a hotel and a cable car for the tourists but they are yet to be completed.

#6 Taj Mahal must be included in The Seven Wonders of the World

Taj Mahal is the tomb of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan’s beautiful wife Mumtaz Mahal. It is located in Agra, India and is one of the most famous tourist destinations of the country. Built in 1643 AD, the tomb is a magnificent structure made of pure white marble and limestone. Parks and canals make up for the space around the tomb and cover an area of around 42 acre. The cost of the complex is estimated to have been around US $ 827 million by today standards. The mausoleum is described as “A tear drop on the cheek of time” by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

The site attracts 7 to 8 million tourists annually and approach to the tomb is fairly easy as it is located within the city of Agra and buses and other modes of transport are readily available. A trip to India must always be accompanied by a visit to the Taj Mahal because of its sheer ambiance and beauty. #7 Christ the redeemer history

Erected fairly recently in the 20th century. The statue of Christ the Redeemer located at the hilltop of the 700 meter tall mountain “Corcovado” overlooking the city of Rio De Janerio. The statue itself is a whopping 30 meters tall and 8 meters wide at the outstretched arms. It weighs around 635 metric tons and is made up of reinforced concrete and soapstone.

The statue has become a symbol of Christianity and Brazil worldwide and is one of the major tourist attractions of the country. The site is easily accessible via a network of cable cars or by a hike of the mountain. It has been filmed during the shooting of various films placed in Brazil and is a very well-known structure.
